You spend most of your time preparing studies for proposed transportation projects: new bus routes, bike lane networks, highway interchanges, pedestrian crossings. The work is technical and methodical. You gather traffic counts, compile ridership data, analyse travel patterns, and run models that predict how people will move through a system that does not yet exist. Much of the day happens at a desk, building scenarios in specialised software, writing reports that translate those scenarios into language that engineers, elected officials, and the public can use to make decisions. Fieldwork is occasional, not constant. You visit sites to verify conditions, observe traffic flow at peak hours, or walk a proposed route to understand how it connects to the surrounding area. Most of your analysis happens in the office, working with computer aided design software, geographic information systems, and transportation modelling tools. The rhythm is project based. Deadlines cluster around public hearings, grant applications, and environmental review windows, and stress runs in cycles, spiking before a major presentation or when a model refuses to converge, then easing during the research phase of the next study. Active listening helps you understand what a neighbourhood association is actually concerned about when they say they oppose a project, or what an engineer means when they say a design is "not feasible." You also need to write clearly. Your reports are read by people who do not have your technical background but who need to make high-stakes decisions based on what you found. If you cannot explain your methodology and your recommendations in plain terms, the work does not move forward.
Technical skills include transportation modelling software, GIS, and CAD. You learn most of these on the job, but you need to be comfortable learning software that is dense, poorly documented, and updated infrequently. A tolerance for bureaucracy is useful. You work within federal funding guidelines, environmental review processes, and public participation requirements that add months to every project. The work suits people who can stay focused on a question for a long time without needing to see immediate results.

Senior roles, reached after 15 to 20 years, involve setting priorities for an entire planning department or leading long-term regional transportation visions. Demand is stable, growth is modest, and automation risk is low because the work depends on judgment that is difficult to encode.
