You sit between the lab and the market, translating what materials scientists discover into products companies will pay for. You triage, prioritise, and decide which fires need water and which need oxygen. Much of the role is project management under technical uncertainty. You maintain plans, run cross-functional standups, and update stakeholders on why the alloy that looked promising in the lab keeps cracking during extrusion trials.
You work closely with R&D teams, though you are not running the experiments yourself. You define what success looks like, set the performance specs, and decide when to kill a project that is not converging. How people get into the role and grow
Most people enter with a bachelor's degree in materials science, chemistry, or chemical engineering, often followed by a few years in a lab or process engineering role. The technical experience gives you credibility and teaches you how materials development actually works, which differs from how it is taught. Some come in from technical sales or applications engineering roles where they worked closely with customers on material selection. An MBA is common at the senior level, though not universal.
Your first role is typically associate product manager or technical PM on an established material line. You own a slice of the plan, coordinate with one or two chemists, and support the senior PM on larger initiatives. You learn how to run a stage-gate process, how to read a P&L, and how to tell a scientist that the project they love is not going to get funded. After five to seven years, you move into a senior PM role with full ownership of a product line or material platform. You set strategy, manage a budget, and make the call on which bets to place.
The senior track leads toward director-level roles where you oversee several PMs, or you move into technical leadership, business development, or strategy. Some shift into venture capital or consulting focused on deep tech. The base you build here carries well into any domain where technical complexity meets commercial risk.
