Your role is to prevent the sprawl, to make sure the new marketing automation tool can actually talk to the sales system without a custom-built adapter that will break in two years. You balance what's ideal against what's affordable and what the organisation can actually execute. The work is abstract, but the consequences are concrete: if you get it wrong, the company spends millions on systems that don't integrate, projects stall, and technical debt piles up until someone has to rip it all out and start over.

You need to understand technology at a systems level. That means knowing how applications, data, infrastructure, and security all fit together, not just in theory but in the specific reality of cloud platforms, API design, microservices, and legacy monoliths that nobody wants to touch. Influence without authority is the daily condition. You don't manage most of the people who have to follow your architecture, so you persuade, you build consensus, and you write the documentation that makes the right path the easy path.

You need to see around corners: what happens when this system grows 10x, when the company acquires a competitor, when a new regulation forces you to redesign how you handle customer data. You make decisions today that the organisation will live with for years. You need patience for long feedback loops. The architecture you design this quarter might not get built for a year, and you might not see the payoff for three.

You work with people constantly, but most of it is structured: scheduled meetings, working sessions, review boards. This is not the kind of role where you are managing a team day to day or putting out fires in production. You operate in PowerPoint and Visio and Lucidchart as much as in code. Senior level is fifteen years or more, often in a chief enterprise architect role where you are setting strategy for a large company or a complex business unit. From there the next step is usually into the C-suite: chief technology officer or chief information officer, depending on whether the company leans engineering or operations. The work stays strategic, but it gets broader, with more budget authority and more exposure to the board. Demand is steady, growth projects at 8% through 2033, and automation hasn't figured out how to make these calls yet.
