You talk them through what you are doing, explain why the gel is cold, and watch for signs they are uncomfortable or need a break.
Documentation follows every scan: you label images, note measurements, and write preliminary observations that the radiologist will use to write the final report. You also clean the equipment, restock gel, and make sure the next room is ready before the next patient arrives. The work is methodical and the schedule is tight.
Skills and strengths that matter
You need a working understanding of anatomy and the physics of sound waves. Tissue, fluid, bone, and air all reflect ultrasound differently, and you adjust gain, frequency, and depth based on what you are trying to see. The technology is less forgiving than CT or MRI. If you set it wrong, the image is useless.
Social perceptiveness matters more here than in most imaging roles. You work inches from patients who are anxious, in pain, or holding still while you press on a tender abdomen, and you read their faces and adjust pressure or pace without being asked. Coordination between your hands, your eyes, and the machine becomes automatic after the first year, but it takes deliberate practice to get there. Active listening is constant. Patients ask if you see anything wrong, and while you cannot interpret, you can hear what they are really asking and respond without crossing that line.
The role requires calm under pressure. Emergency scans happen with little notice. You might be called to the ICU to check for internal bleeding or to labour and delivery for a foetal heart tracing, and the room will be full of people moving fast. You do your job while others do theirs.

If you want autonomy over clinical decisions, this will frustrate you. If you want to do technical work that directly affects patient outcomes without carrying the weight of diagnosis, it fits.
You interact with people constantly, but the relationships are brief. A scan takes twenty to sixty minutes, and you will not see most patients again. Some people find that easier than long-term care roles. Others find it isolating. The work is almost entirely on-site and almost entirely in a team setting, though you spend much of your day in a room with one patient at a time.
Prolonged standing and repetitive motion take a toll. Shoulder and wrist injuries are common. If you have chronic pain or limited stamina, the physical load becomes a barrier.

Early in your career, you work under the supervision of more experienced sonographers and radiologists.
