What does a Cost Optimization Engineer do?
What the work is really like
You spend most of your time staring at dashboards that track how much an organisation spends on cloud infrastructure. Every virtual machine, storage bucket, and database instance generates a bill, and your job is to find where the money leaks and plug it. You run queries against cost management tools, tag unallocated resources, and spot patterns in usage data that suggest waste. A developer might spin up a high-memory instance for testing and forget to shut it down. You catch it.
The work runs on two tracks. One is reactive: finance flags a spike in monthly spend, and you trace it back to a service that scaled without anyone noticing. The other is preventive: you model the impact of switching from on-demand instances to reserved capacity, or you build automation that shifts workloads to spot instances when demand is low. Much of the day is spreadsheets, cost allocation reports, and meetings where you explain to engineering teams why their architecture is expensive. You also write code: scripts to analyse usage logs, tools to forecast spend, workflows that automatically resize or shut down idle resources.
Cloud platforms bill by the second, and optimisation happens at that same granularity. You might save the company six figures a year by renegotiating a commitment plan or convincing a product team to refactor how they store data. The wins go unremarked.
